WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY
AACCO organizational structure consists
of a Diocesan Implementation Team Leader/Coordinator, who is appointed
by the Diocesan Bishop, as representative to the National
Black Catholic Congress. Team members are elected by AACCO
members, to serve a three to five year term, which coincides with
annual Congress
Meetings. Implementation Team
members organize and chair six committees, that are tasked with implementing
the updated goals and objectives, which are : To be aligned more
closely with the objectives and goals of both the NBCC and the Archdiocesan
program Disciples
in Mission; To live out our baptismal call to holiness more fully;
To commit ourselves to establishing an agenda for the evangelization of
African Americans by helping to improve the spiritual, mental and physical
conditions of all African Americans. The committees are
as follows: Congress IX, Faith Formation & Evangelization, Youth and
Young Adults, Special Events, Liturgy and Finance.
AACCO sponsors a monthly meeting on the third Sunday of each month, at Immaculate Heart 2926 N Williams, Portland, 1:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall, workshops and seminars and other special activities for the African American community throughout the year at various locations around the Archdiocese of Portland. These activities are designed to uplift spiritually, educate, and gather information to increase awareness and address issues of social, economic and moral situations faced by the African American community.
CAN I ATTEND CONGRESS MEETINGS?
Congresses are presently held every 5 years,
individuals can attend on their own. However, to become a delegate
to the Congress, with voting privileges a person must be willing to work
on and implement
activities and programs set forth
by the National Black Congress,
for 5 years in the African American Catholic Community. Days
of Reflection are usually held to critically discuss NBCC sponsored
documents. Sessions are designed to engage participants
head, heart, and soul in discussions. Small group reflection, and
small group sharing to process the wisdom of the faith community.
The information gathered here is documented and forwarded to NBCC,
to enable them to prepare an agenda for the upcoming Congress.
