Archdiocese begins new program for child protection

The Archdiocese of Portland announces that it has contracted with Praesidium, Inc., to begin offering the “Called to Protect” safe environment educational program. “Called to Protect” is a four-part multi-media series designed for Catholic parishes and schools. The program has separate programs for those working in ministry, for parents, for middle and high school students and for elementary students. The selection of this educational process is part of the Archdiocese of Portland’s continuing commitment to provide a safe environment for all participants in parishes and schools.

Each parish will have trained leaders to present the program to parish ministers, volunteers, parents and students. Leadership training will be presented by experts from Praesidium beginning in August 2007. The training will include discussion of the content of each of the four parts of the program, supplemental information on how to prevent child sexual abuse and provide important teaching skills.

“Called to Protect” for those involved in parish and school leadership and ministries will consider a five step process to help keep parishes safe. The process includes effective screening of applicants for job positions, policies that define acceptable verbal and physical interactions between adults and children, effective monitoring of adults who work with children, safe environment training and how to respond to inappropriate interactions or allegations of abuse.

“Called to Protect” for parents and families will help parents recognize interactions that may be inappropriate or put a child at risk for abuse, how to respond when they see something of concern, recognition of signs that indicate possible abuse and how to teach their own children how to protect themselves from abuse.

Middle and high school students are taught awareness of personal boundaries: physical, emotional and behavioral. They are taught to recognize when others cross those boundaries and ways to stop violations of boundaries. They are also taught words to tell parents and other trusted adults about someone who is abusing them or one of their friends. “Called to Protect” for younger children teaches them rules about their bodies, and provides age appropriate concepts that children can easily understand.

Cathy Shannon is the full time Child Protection and Victims Assistance director for the Archdiocese of Portland. Considering the adoption of the “Called to Protect” program Cathy said, "I am excited to have "Called to Protect" implemented in our parishes and schools. In the context of the Gospel values it gives clear and concise steps for parents, parishes and schools to keep children safe. I think parents and parish/school leadership will be happy with this expansion of our safety education." Ms. Shannon is available by phone 503-416-8810, and by email cshannon@archdpdx.org. The Archdiocese’s Child Abuse Policy is available on the web site www.archdpdx.org/cpo/child-abuse-policy-revised.htm.
