DISCIPLES IN MISSION: THE PREPARATION HAS BEGUN

The Archdiocese of Portland is anticipating the start of the Disciples in Mission process with a year of preparation. Disciples in Mission is a process for parishes, which integrates prayer, the Sunday liturgies, faith-sharing groups, catechesis, family activities, planning and follow-up activities in a parish-wide experience of evangelization.

The Archdiocesan Leadership team was selected and members participated in an
intensive weekend training session. The next step was a series of ten information and
orientation sessions throughout the Archdiocese. One last orientation session will be held
at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center on Tuesday, May 16 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Parishes are making the commitment to participate in the Disciples in Mission process starting in 2001 and continuing until 2004. As of May 8, 37 parishes plus the Southeast Asian Vicariate and the Catholic Deaf Community have committed to participate. Many other parishes have made verbal commitments and are selecting their parish leadership for the process.

Parish coordinators will participate in a training session to be held this summer.  Training sessions for parish coordinators are scheduled for July 22 and August 19 in the Portland area, July 29 in the mid-Willamette Valley area and August 12 in the southern Oregon area. The parish coordinators will then select parishioners to serve as part of the parish leadership team. The parish leadership teams will then receive training from the
diocesan leadership team, which is scheduled for September 9, 16, and 24 throughout the
Archdiocese.
