FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT—CYCLE C

QUESTIONS:
1.  The Book of Deuteronomy recalls that the people of Israel once lived as aliens in the land of Egypt. Who are the Levites and Aliens of our day? How long ago was it that your family was alien, migrant, dispossessed or without a permanent home?

2.  Paul says that with the Lord there is no difference between Jew and Greek, that all have the same Lord who is rich in mercy to all. How does our community reflect God’s love by welcoming to all levels of parish life and participation, all people whatever their differences from us?

3.  As we enter the desert with Jesus, in what ways might we find ourselves struggling with our dominant culture, with its materialism, orientation toward consumption, promotion of addictions and greed?

ACTIONS:
1.  Set aside some time this week to enter the desert in reflection on what are the values by which you live. Who or what have formed you in these values: God? The Culture? Your family? Your friends? Journal on these questions. Choose a value or virtue you would like to strengthen by daily effort as a positive component of your Lenten fast.

2.  Set up 30-45 minute conversation with someone you know or would like to know better. Share your family story of work, migration and how your family has been impacted by major public events.
