ARCHDIOCESE PLANS SIX CELEBRATIONS FOR RITE OF ELECTION

The Archdiocese of Portland plans to hold six celebrations of the Rite of Election
this year for those planning on joining the Church at the Easter Vigil. The Rite of
Election celebrates the intention of those seeking to join the Church, and marks the
beginning of their final preparation period during the Lenten Season. The Rite of
Election is traditionally celebrated in the presence of the diocesan bishop.

Over 1000 individuals were either baptized or entered into full communion with
the Church at last year's Easter Vigil. A similar number is expected this year. Due to
the large number of catechumens and candidates, their sponsors and family members,
the Archdiocese will hold six celebrations of the Rite of Election.

The times and places for the celebration of the Rite of Election this year will be:

March 3 10:00 am   St. Joseph                Roseburg  Archbishop Vlazny

March 3 7:30 pm     St. Mary's Cathedral Portland    Archbishop Vlazny

March 4 2:00 pm     St. Mary's Cathedral Portland    Archbishop Vlazny

March 4 7:30 pm     St. Mary's Cathedral Portland    Archbishop Vlazny

March 4 3:00 pm     St. Mary                   Albany      Bishop Steiner

March 10 11:00 am St. Monica                Coos Bay  Bishop Steiner

Prior to attending the archdiocesan Rite of Election each local parish will
celebrate a Rite of Sending. At the parish ritual, catechumens preparing for baptism
and candidates preparing for entry into full communion with the Church will inscribe
their names in the parish Book of the Elect. These books will then be presented at the
archdiocesan Rite of Election where the names will be read. The catechumens and
candidates will be joined by their sponsors, family members, parish catechists and
members of the parish pastoral staff.
