PORTLAND DEACON APPOINTED TO NATIONAL EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION

The United States Catholic Bishops have established a Secretariat for
Evangelization. The Secretariat was approved by the Bishops' at their November 2000
meeting. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops also established a U.S.
Commission on Catholic Evangelization as a practical way to foster the implementation
of Go and Make Disciples, A National Plan and Strategy for Catholic
Evangelization in the United States. The Bishops approved this plan and strategy
in November 1992.

Reverend Mr. Thomas Gornick, Portland, has been appointed to serve on the
U.S. Commission on Catholic Evangelization. Deacon Gornick serves as the Director of
the Department of Evangelization for the Archdiocese of Portland. He also serves as a
Deacon at St. Mary Cathedral parish.

Commenting on his appointment to the Commission Deacon Gornick said:

The U.S. Commission on Evangelization is a wonderful gift allowing
diocesan leaders from around the nation to exchange ideas and strategies
to bring the Gospel to our communities. The commission will also be
challenged to make the goals of the U.S. Bishops' plan and strategy, Go
and Make Disciples, a reality in every Catholic diocese and parish. It is
a privilege to represent the Northwest in this essential work.
