MENTAL ILLNESS AND THE CHURCH: CALLED TO RESPOND
An opportunity for parish leaders and parishioners to learn more about
the call in
the Church to respond to the needs of
the mentally ill will take place on Saturday, February
3rd. The workshop will be held at St.
Philip Neri Parish in Portland (2408 SE 16th
Avenue) in Carvlin Hall. The workshop
will run from 9:15 a.m. until 3:45 p.m.
Pope John Paul II addressed health care
workers in 1997 stating:
"Whoever suffers from mental illness 'always' bears God's likeness in himself, as doesThe workshop "Mental Illness & the Church: We Are Called to Respond" will help
every human being. In addition, he 'always' has the inalienable right not only to be
considered as an image of God and therefore as a person, but also to be treated as
such…. It is everyone's duty to make an active response: our actions must show that
mental illness does not create insurmountable distances, nor prevent relations of true
Christian charity with those who are its victims."~ Pope John Paul II, International Conference for Pastoral Assistance to Health
Care Workers, November 1997.
