SCOUTS TO RECEIVE AWARDS
On Sunday, January 28, 2001 Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from throughout
western Oregon will be awarded their Catholic
Religious emblems by Bishop Kenneth
Steiner, Auxiliary Bishop of Portland,
and the Archdiocesan Catholic Committee on
Scouting. The awards will be presented
during services at Christ the Teacher Chapel on
the Campus of the University of Portland.
The youth over the past year, working with
scout and church leaders, have completed
the requirements for the Catholic Scouting
Religious Awards. Earning the awards help
the scouts better understand their duty to
God, family and neighbors as Catholics,
scouts and citizens. The requirements include
study about their faith, the importance
of the relationship with others and offering
service to their particular community.
"These young men and women are a gift to
their families, scout units and
community," said Deacon Thomas Gornick,
Scout Chaplain for western Oregon. He
continued, "Each one of them has taken
time to focus on their faith and service to their
neighbors. This experience enriches us
today and we hope it will continue throughout
their lives as Catholics and citizens."
The Boy Scout Catholic Scouting Religious Awards are:
Light of Christ, awarded to Tiger
Cub Scouts and Wolf Cub Scouts before he starts
the third grade.
Parvuli Dei, awarded to any Cub Scout who has completed the second grade.
Ad Altare Dei, awarded to members of the Boy Scout program.
Pius XII, awarded to high school Boy Scouts, Explorer or Venture Scouts.
The Girl Scout Catholic Scouting Religious Awards are:
I Live My Faith, awarded to Girl Scouts before they have completed the third grade.
Family of God Medal, awarded to Girl Scouts who have completed the second grade.
Five girls will receive the I Live My Faith award, 2 girls will receive
the Family
of God Medal, 74 boys will receive the
Light of Christ award, and 60 boys will
receive the Parvuli Dei award.
