ST. ANTHONY VILLAGE WINS GOVERNOR'S LIVABILITY AWARD

St. Anthony Village in southeast Portland was honored with a 2001 Governor's
Livability Award. The award was presented to Village Enterprise on behalf of St.
Anthony Village with a special presentation to Archbishop John G. Vlazny, and accepted
by Father Michael Maslowsky on behalf of the Village and Archbishop Vlazny. Father
Maslowsky stated:

The Board of Directors of St. Anthony Village is gratified to receive
the Governor's recognition. It is a public acknowledgement of the
social benefit of the village concept. It recognizes the importance
of offering to people of all ages and conditions an interactive faith-
based environment.
This seventh annual award was given on behalf of the Governor by Livability
Oregon, which is a non-profit organization of concerned citizens, business and public
officials. The organization recognizes and fosters projects that promote the quality of
life and livable communities through education and advocacy throughout Oregon.
Dozens of projects are nominated in the state. The judging panel includes architects,
environmental engineers and government officials. The projects selected for the
Governor's Livability Award represents the best expression of development in Oregon
with particular focus on those projects, which enhance individual and community life.

St. Anthony Village is composed of 127 housing units serving three levels of
care: independent, assisted living and Alzheimer's living. The Village includes St.
Anthony parish church and parish center, walking paths and gardens, and an on-site
child day care center. The Governor's Livability Award is the fifth local and national
honor given to St. Anthony Village. The community value of the Village is one of the
goals successfully implemented, and noted in the award nomination: "In addition to the
housing, church, and day care centers, the Village provides a central location for the
following programs: the parish center is used by the neighborhood association, AA
meetings, and senior fitness program; the community garden is used by residents and
parishioners; the open space is used for annual festivals, weddings, and strolling; the
assisted living building houses a community food bank. There are also strong
connections that reinforce links between all age groups within the site; seniors can
volunteer at the child care center; regular visits by the children brighten the assisted
living center; the parish center's kitchen helps with meals for the senior apartments and
parishioners."

Five Oregon projects received a 2001 Governor's Livability Award including
awards to the Portland Classical Chinese Gardens, PCRI Single Family Residences and
St. Anthony Village, all in Portland.
