"SPIRITUAL DIRECTION" IS TOPIC FOR SUMMER INSTITUTE

        The Summer Institute will be held on August 10 & 11, at St. Pius X Church (1280
NW Saltzman Road, Portland). The Summer Institute provides an opportunity for
church workers and others to gather together around a common theme. "Spiritual
Direction: Its History and Present Practice" is the theme for this year's Institute.
The presenters will be Father Patrick Brennan and Dr. Maria Bowen. The Institute will
begin on Friday, August 10th at 2:00 p.m., and continue until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday,
August 11. The Ministry Formation Program of the Archdiocese of Portland sponsors
the Summer Institute.

        Father Patrick Brennan is a priest of the Archdiocese of Portland for the past 23
years. Father Brennan is currently serving as the Judicial Vicar for the Archdiocese and
is a Spiritual Director at the North American College in Rome. Father Brennan served as
the President-Rector of Mt. Angel Seminary from 1990 - 2000. He received his Bachelor
of Arts degree from Mt. Angel Seminary, a Sacred Theology Licentiate from
the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and a Licentiate degree in Canon Law from
the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Father Brennan will discuss the
"Art of Spiritual Direction and Formation."

        Dr. Maria Bowen is an Assistant Professor of Theology at the University of
Portland. She joined the faculty in 2000. Dr. Bowen received her Ph.D. from the
Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA. Her area of research is Spirituality. She has
been an educator for the past 16 years. Dr. Bowen's presentation will be
"Understanding Spiritual Direction in Our Catholic Tradition."

        The price of the Institute is $55 with meals (Friday dinner, Saturday continental
breakfast and lunch), or $25 without meals. To register, contact the Ministry
