CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT GRANT APPLICATIONS

        The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) of the Archdiocese of
Portland is now accepting applications for local CCHD grants. The Catholic Campaign
for Human Development is the United States Catholic Bishops' education and action
program for combating poverty in the U.S. The purpose of CCHD is to provide support
and assistance to low-income community groups involved in self-help and practical
social change for the common good.

        Local Catholic Campaign for Human Development grants will be up to $5,000.
Generally, local CCHD grants shall not exceed more than one third of the entire
organizational budget, but may fully fund a specific project of an organization. The
deadline for local CCHD grants in western Oregon is July 31, 2001.

        The Catholic Campaign for Human Develop is funded by an annual collection in
Catholic parishes throughout the United States. This year's collection was taken in
November in the Archdiocese of Portland, and Catholics in western Oregon contributed
a record $209,024.

        The Catholic Campaign for Human Development provides both national and local
grants to projects in western Oregon. In the current year, the Catholic Campaign for
Human Development in the Archdiocese of Portland provided local grants to nine
projects in western Oregon totaling $42,500, national grants to four Oregon projects
totaling $100,000, plus another national grant of $45,000 for a regional project that
includes Oregon. Nationally, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development
announced the distribution of $10.1 million targeted to projects fighting poverty this
year.

Criteria for Catholic Campaign for Human Development grants include:

• At least 50% of those benefiting from the project must be from the low-income community.
• Members of the Poverty group must have the dominant voice in the project.
• Projects must work to bring about institutional change by attacking the basic social, economic and political      causes  of poverty and powerlessness.
• Projects may have a focus on community-based ecologically sustainable economic development with business efforts that ensure family wages, meaningful work and participatory respect in the work place.
• Projects should empower low-income people to gain access to community decision-making structures.
