"LIVING SIMPLY" - PEACE & JUSTICE FAMILY CAMP
The eleventh annual Parenting for Peace and Justice Family Camp will take
place
June 28 - July 1 at the Aldersgate Conference
Center near Salem. This year's camp will
offer an opportunity to learn and practice
the art of living simply and living in solidarity
for the common good. Group presentations
will be made by Rosemarie Cordello and
David Sweet and by Debi Alexander. The
camping experience is one for the whole
family. Childcare is offered for children
under age three during group sessions, and
children 3 - 6 years participate in their
own camp programs.
The annual Parenting for Peace and Justice Family Camp was honored in March
of this year by Ecumenical Ministries
of Oregon with the Two Paul's Award.
Ecumenical Ministries noted that "one
of the outstanding values of the annual camp is
its capacity to kindle inter-family friendships
which provide strength and courage to
continue the local work of peace and justice
through family life and community action
when families return to their respective
faith / neighborhood communities after camp."
Rosemarie Cordello and husband David Sweet
will help campers explore how to
shed their lives of distractions to focus
on living in accordance with one's highest
values. They will explore how voluntary
simplicity can deepen commitment to caring
for creation and leading to a truly authentic
life. Debi Alexander will share the guiding
principles of the Trillium Artisans and
describe ways community members can be in
solidarity with Neighborhood Pride Team.
Rosemarie is the Founder and Executive Director of Sustainable Communities
Northwest. This nonprofit corporation
provides affordable housing to people of low and
moderate income in the Portland area with
an emphasis on ecologically sound building
and furthering sustainable community.
She is a frequent speaker on sustainable
development and environmentally sensitive
building. David Sweet is the national
Training Coordinator for the Northwest
Earth Institute (NWEI), a nonprofit organization
based in Portland. He has been involved
with NWEI since 1993.
Debi Alexander, the mother of four children, became active in her children's
schools and in community development.
She found her niche at Trillium Artists. She
became a facilitator in Neighborhood Pride
Team's annual "chair - ity" event, turning
donated chairs to works of art for auctioning.
The Parenting for Peace and Justice Family Camp is sponsored by the
Archdiocese of Portland's Office of Justice
and Peace/Catholic Campaign for Human
Development with support from the Archdiocesan
Offices for Family Life, Hispanic
