CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN SUPPORTS MEDIA EFFORTS
The annual collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign will be taken
up
in parishes of the Archdiocese of Portland
on the weekend of January 12 - 13, 2002.
The Catholic Communication Campaign supports
the Church's efforts in mass media:
television, radio, print and the internet.
The theme for this year's collection is "Shine a
Light to Give Your Children a Bright Tomorrow."
The Campaign supports efforts of the
Church at both the national and archdiocesan
levels.
At the national level the Catholic Communication Campaign develops and
places
public service announcements for television
and radio. The most recent public service
campaign was titled "Talk to the Ones
You Love." The PSAs were aired on the major
television networks and sent to television
and radio stations across the U.S. Recent
television programs and documentaries
have included "I am Joseph your brother,"
which explored the relationship between
the Catholic and Jewish faiths since World War
II and the Holocaust. It aired on ABC
television stations, including those in Medford
and Portland. Another television special
program developed by the Catholic
Communication Campaign was "The Face:
Jesus in Art." It aired over public broadcast
television stations last spring, and on
the PAX television network on December 25th.
"Catholic Radio Weekly" is the title of a Catholic news and interview program
airing in more than 30 archdioceses and
dioceses including the Archdiocese of Portland.
"Catholic Radio Weekly" includes a mix
of features, personality profiles and news
makers interviews designed to put Catholics
in touch with the concerns of the Church
across the country and around the world.
"Catholic Radio Weekly" airs on KBVM 88.3
FM on Sunday afternoons at 5: 30 p.m.,
and is available anytime on the internet
www.usccb.org/ccc/catholicradio.htm.
Movie reviews and Mass Times are two other services of the Catholic
Communication Campaign. The movie review
line is available to provide film and video
reviews from a Catholic perspective. The
ratings are evaluated by the U.S. Conference
of Catholic Bishops' Office for Film and
Broadcasting according to artistic merit and
moral suitability. The reviews include
the USCCB rating and the Motion Picture
Association of America rating. Movie reviews
are available by phone 1-800-311-4222
and on the internet www.usccb.org/movies/.
The Mass Times service helps travelers
learn the location and scheduled time
of Masses across the U.S. It is available by
phone 1-800-627-7846 and on the internet
at www.masstimes.org.
In the Archdiocese of Portland the Office of Communications maintains contact
with 23 television stations, 78 radio
stations, 13 daily newspapers, and 76 community
newspapers. The office responds to media
questions about church related issues, and
promotes the various ministries of the
Archdiocese through the various media outlets.
The Archdiocese has a web site www.archdpdx.org
available for Catholics in western
Oregon. It is a place to find current
news releases, the calendar of Archdiocesan
events, historical information and information
on the ministries and programs of the
Archdiocese.
The Archdiocese places television programming on public access cable channels,
where available. Christopher Closeup is
currently aired on Portland's cable access
channels 22 (Sundays - 7:30 p.m.) and
23 (Saturdays - 12 noon). Christopher Closeup
also airs on cable channel 99 in the Corvallis/Albany
area.
Funds collected in the Catholic Communications Campaign are split between
the
local diocese and the national Communications
Campaign. Catholics are encouraged to
be as generous as possible in their support
of this vitally important ministry.
