Statement concerning Fr. Louis Charvet lawsuit

        The Archdiocese of Portland has learned through the news media that it has
been named in a lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct involving a minor by Benedictine
Father Louis Charvet. We are told that the events are alleged to have occurred in the
mid-1960's. The Archdiocese of Portland has not seen a copy of the lawsuit. We will
look into this matter and handle it in an appropriate manner.

        As noted before, the Archdiocese of Portland deplores all forms of harm to
human life and condemns the abuse or intentional neglect of children. Child abuse is
contrary to all that the Catholic Church believes and professes about the dignity of
human persons. The Archdiocese is committed to preventing child abuse and
recognizing signs of child abuse in the children it serves.
