Catholic Campaign for Human Development – Grant Proposals

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) of the Archdiocese of
Portland is accepting proposals for local CCHD grants. The Catholic Campaign for
Human Development is the education and action program for combating poverty in the
U.S., and is sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Local
CCHD grants will be accepted until July 31, 2002, and are for funding proposals up to
$5000. Generally, local CCHD grants shall not exceed more than one-third of the entire
organizational budget, but may fully fund a specific project of an organization.

Criteria for funding include:

* At least 50% of those benefiting from the project must be from the low-income community.
* Members of the Poverty group must have the dominant voice in the project.
* Projects must work to bring about institutional change by attacking the basic
social, economic and political causes of poverty and powerlessness.
* Projects may have a focus on community-based ecologically sustainable
economic development with business efforts that ensure family wages,
meaningful work and participatory respect in the work place.
* Projects should empower low-income people to gain access to community
  decision-making structures.

Grants are awarded on the basis of need, not religious affiliation.

In last year's funding cycle (2001-2002) the Catholic Campaign for Human
Development for western Oregon awarded $50,000 to eleven projects that provided
assistance to low-income community groups involved in self-help and practical social
change for the common good. Projects and the sponsoring organization receiving local
