NEW PRINCIPAL NAMED FOR MARIST HIGH SCHOOL
The Archdiocese of Portland and the Marist High School Advisory Council
are
pleased to announce the hiring of Douglas
Orton as the new Principal of Marist High
School. Current Principal, Cheryl Brelsford,
announced earlier this year that this would
be her last year as Principal at Marist.
In announcing the appointment of Doug Orton as the principal-designate
for
Marist High School, effective July 1,
2002, Robert L. Mizia, Superintendent of Catholic
Schools for the Archdiocese of Portland,
said, "On behalf of Archbishop Vlazny and the
Marist High School Community, I am very
pleased to welcome Doug as the new
principal of Marist High School, and I
thank him for offering his educational leadership
and commitment to Catholic secondary education
in the Archdiocese and at Marist. I
also wish to sincerely thank and offer
my appreciation to Cheryl Brelsford for her four
years of dedicated leadership and faith-filled
service to Marist."
Mr. Orton brings a vast experience in teaching, coaching, and administration
to
Marist. Speaking on behalf of the search
committee, Brother William J. Campbell, S.M.,
Assistant Superintendent for Catholic
Schools in the Archdiocese said, "The search
committee faced the wonderful task of
having to choose an exceptional candidate from
a pool of qualified administrators with
varied backgrounds and a long list of excellent
credentials. The committee interviewed
several superb finalists. After thorough and
lengthy discernment, the committee chose
the candidate who possesses the talents that
will best help guide Marist into the future.
We are delighted that Doug Orton has
accepted the position as principal of
Marist High School."
Mr. Orton is currently the Principal at Springfield High School, Springfield,
OR,
where he has served since 1998. He was
previously principal at Creswell Middle
School / High School from 1989 until 1998.
Doug Orton is a graduate of Jesuit High School in Beaverton. He received
a
Bachelor of Science degree from Western
Oregon University in 1970, a Master of
Science degree in secondary education
from Oregon State University in 1976, and
Basic and Standard Administrative licensure
from the University of Oregon.
