NEW PRINCIPAL NAMED FOR MARIST HIGH SCHOOL

The Archdiocese of Portland and the Marist High School Advisory Council are
pleased to announce the hiring of Douglas Orton as the new Principal of Marist High
School. Current Principal, Cheryl Brelsford, announced earlier this year that this would
be her last year as Principal at Marist.

In announcing the appointment of Doug Orton as the principal-designate for
Marist High School, effective July 1, 2002, Robert L. Mizia, Superintendent of Catholic
Schools for the Archdiocese of Portland, said, "On behalf of Archbishop Vlazny and the
Marist High School Community, I am very pleased to welcome Doug as the new
principal of Marist High School, and I thank him for offering his educational leadership
and commitment to Catholic secondary education in the Archdiocese and at Marist. I
also wish to sincerely thank and offer my appreciation to Cheryl Brelsford for her four
years of dedicated leadership and faith-filled service to Marist."

Mr. Orton brings a vast experience in teaching, coaching, and administration to
Marist. Speaking on behalf of the search committee, Brother William J. Campbell, S.M.,
Assistant Superintendent for Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese said, "The search
committee faced the wonderful task of having to choose an exceptional candidate from
a pool of qualified administrators with varied backgrounds and a long list of excellent
credentials. The committee interviewed several superb finalists. After thorough and
lengthy discernment, the committee chose the candidate who possesses the talents that
will best help guide Marist into the future. We are delighted that Doug Orton has
accepted the position as principal of Marist High School."

Mr. Orton is currently the Principal at Springfield High School, Springfield, OR,
where he has served since 1998. He was previously principal at Creswell Middle
School / High School from 1989 until 1998.

Doug Orton is a graduate of Jesuit High School in Beaverton. He received a
Bachelor of Science degree from Western Oregon University in 1970, a Master of
Science degree in secondary education from Oregon State University in 1976, and
Basic and Standard Administrative licensure from the University of Oregon.
