Assistant Superintendent of Schools moves to national association

Brother William J. Campbell, SM, Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools
for Personnel & Technology, has accepted a position with the National Catholic
Educational Association (NCEA). Brother Bill will serve as the Assistant Executive
Director for the Department of Elementary Schools. He will assume his position in
August. Brother Bill has served in the Archdiocese of Portland since 1996.

Robert Mizia, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of
Portland, offered this reflection on Brother Bill's new position at NCEA: "Obviously we
are very happy and honored that Bill has been asked to share his Catholic educational
vision and many talents with the larger Catholic school community on the national level.
Personally, and I'm sure that I speak on behalf of our Department of Catholic Schools,
principals, teachers, school pastors and many others, we will miss Bill's presence with
us. He has made a remarkable contribution to Catholic education in the archdiocese,
especially in the areas of school personnel, principal formation, and educational
technology. We all pray for Brother Bill in this transition period, thank him for all that he
has so generously accomplished in his seven years with us, and ask God's generous
blessings on him and his new Catholic educational ministry at NCEA."

Brother Bill is a member of the Marianist religious community. He earned a
Bachelor of Arts degree and three Master degrees, and then earned a Doctorate degree
in Education Management from the University of La Verne in 1990. Brother Bill
completed a Sabbatical Program at Washington Theological Union in 1995, and earned
a Certificate in Teaching and Learning with Instructional Technology from Portland State
University in 2001.

Brother Bill has been a teacher, dean of students, coach, counselor, athletic
director, assistant principal and principal at Catholic schools in New York, North
Carolina and California. He served as Assistant Provincial and Director of Education for
the Marianist Province of the Pacific in Cupertino, CA, prior to becoming the Assistant
Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Portland. He currently serves on the
Board of Directors/Trustees for Chaminade University, Honolulu, HI, St. Mary's
University, San Antonio, TX, the University of Dayton, Dayton, OH and Regis High
School in Stayton, OR. Brother Bill is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, National Catholic
Education Association, National Association of Secondary School Principals, American
Counseling Association, and Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Brother Bill's most recent publications have included "Selecting a Catholic
Elementary School Principal" (NCEA Publications, 2000), and "Principal Formation
Program" (NCEA Publications, 2002). He has also developed manuals and handbooks
for use within the Archdiocese of Portland.

The Department of Elementary Schools is the largest department within the
National Catholic Education Association, serving over 7,000 schools. The department
serves its member schools by working to enhance the Catholic identity of Catholic
school communities, fostering effective Catholic educational leadership, addressing
current and future educational needs, and enabling Catholic schools to attain greater
human and financial support.
