Archdiocese celebrates World Day for Consecrated Life

The World Day for Consecrated Life will be celebrated on Sunday, February 2nd.
Archbishop John G. Vlazny has invited all members in religious orders and in secular
institutes to join him for a Vespers prayer service beginning at 3:00 p.m., at St. Mary's
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (NW 18th & Couch Streets, Portland). The
theme for the celebration this year is "I have seen the face of Christ."

This day of prayer highlights persons who have made a special consecration in
the Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II has said that this day provides an opportunity to
thank God for the gift of consecrated life, to promote knowledge of this life, to invite
those in consecrated life to celebrate what the Lord has accomplished in them, and to
promote a greater awareness of their mission in the Church and in the world.

In the Archdiocese of Portland members of religious communities serve in
various ministries including education at the elementary and secondary levels, at
Catholic Universities, and in Archdiocesan education administration. Members serve in
various ministries and capacities in health care, in social ministry among the poor,
ministering to those in jails or prisons, ministering to the Catholic deaf community, and
in other parish ministries. Some religious communities are contemplative spending their
days in prayer and mediation praying for the needs of the Church.
