Statement concerning status of lawsuits
The Archdiocese of Portland considers the mediation in the lawsuits concerning
child abuse a success. These cases are
difficult for all concerned, and we are pleased
that so many cases were resolved without
trial. The Archdiocese has only limited
resources, and we want to compensate as
many deserving plaintiffs as possible.
Settling means that we can use what we
have to pay individual claimants, rather than
attorneys and others to prepare for trial.
The Archdiocese is continuing to work at
resolving cases and hopes to settle those
still pending.
To assist those who were sexually abused as minors by a Catholic priest,
the
Archdiocese of Portland is sponsoring
a 10-week support group. The free sessions are
designed to help people in dealing with
the denial and anger, as well as provide
educational opportunities. These sessions
will be led by Dr. Jonathon Beamer, M.D., a
board certified psychiatrist in private
practice who has extensive experience in both
post-traumatic stress disorder and working
with people who have been abused.
Interested participants can call Dr. Beamer at 503-293-2344 for an initial
appointment. The first of the 10 sessions
will be held September 10, from 6:30 p.m. to
8:30 p.m. at Dr. Beamer's office in the
Vermont-Hills area of Portland.
