Archdiocese sponsoring support group for those abused by a priest
The Archdiocese of Portland is sponsoring a 10-week support group for people
who were sexually abused as minors by
a Catholic priest. The free sessions are
designed to help people in dealing with
the denial and anger, as well as provide
educational opportunities. These sessions
will be led by Dr. Jonathon Beamer, M.D., a
board certified psychiatrist in private
practice who has extensive experience in both
post-traumatic stress disorder and working
with people who have been abused.
"We recognize that there maybe people who need a professional to help them
through their experience, and we appreciate
Dr. Beamer's support in facilitating these
sessions," said Archbishop John G. Vlazny.
Along with Dr. Beamer, Providence Health
System has helped the Archdiocese of Portland
put the program together.
Interested participants can call Dr. Beamer at 503-293-2344 for an initial
appointment. The first of the 10 sessions
will be held September 10, from 6:30 p.m. to
8:30 p.m. at Dr. Beamer's office in the
Vermont-Hills area of Portland.
