Parishioners asked to help hurricane victims
Catholics in western Oregon are asked to consider helping the thousands of people in need in the wake of hurricane Charley. Florida bishops report seeing homes and businesses torn apart into small pieces from the hurricane. Many of the victims are elderly and have lost their homes. There is a need for shelter, food, water and the simple basics of life. Many migrant workers were hard hit by the storm, but have little recourse for much governmental assistance.
Catholic Charities USA is working through local diocesan offices to channel assistance to those in need. Since the storm, the Catholic Charities agencies in Florida have been assessing the needs of the people who have lost their homes and way of life. Catholic Charities will continue to provide not only immediate physical assistance, but also offer long-term help with counseling and housing assistance.
Many parishes will be taking up a special collection for the relief efforts,
or donations may be sent to the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center (2838 E. Burnside
Street, Portland, OR 97214) and noting that the donation is for “Hurricane
Relief.” Funds collected will be applied to the relief efforts in Florida.
