Archdiocese denounces religious intolerance and intimidation
The Archdiocese of Portland denounces the
burning of a cross into the lawn of a Jewish family’s home in Lake Oswego.
Such intimidation is outrageous, and reflects poorly on all citizens of
the State of Oregon. In a state that professes tolerance and acceptance,
this action against this family points to another reality. Throughout Oregon’s
history, many individuals have experienced prejudice and harassment because
of the color of their skin, their religious beliefs, or their place of
origin. The symbol of the cross points to a man, Jesus Christ, who gave
his life for the sins of others. Such a symbol should never be used for
harassment or intimidation.
