Archbishop will celebrate annual Chrism Mass
The annual Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 5. Archbishop
John G. Vlazny will celebrate this Mass
at St. Mary's Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception at 7:00 p.m.
The holy oils used for sacramental anointing are blessed at the Chrism
Mass.
There are three oils to be blessed. The
Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint those
preparing for baptism. The Oil of the
Sick is used for those who are seeking healing of
body, mind and spirit. The holy Chrism
Oil is used in the Sacraments of Baptism,
Confirmation and Ordination of a priest
or bishop, and also used in the dedication of a
church or altar. The blessed oils from
this Chrism Mass will be distributed to all
parishes and missions in Western Oregon.
The priests of the Archdiocese will join Archbishop Vlazny for this
celebration. The Chrism Mass recognizes
the unity between the bishop and the priests
of the diocese. The priests will renew
their promise of obedience to the Archbishop and
to his successors, and renew their commitment
to pastoral ministry and service.
Catholics are cordially invited to attend the Chrism Mass at St. Mary Cathedral
on Monday, April 5, at 7:00 p.m. Archbishop
Vlazny has offered a special invitation to
those preparing to enter the Church this
Easter.
