Archdiocese opposes licenses for same-sex unions

        The Archdiocese of Portland strongly opposes the action by Multnomah County to issue “marriage” licenses to same-sex couples.  This action is contrary to society’s understanding of marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

        Archbishop John G. Vlazny said, “The Catholic understanding of marriage is well known.  Same-sex unions are not marriage.  Marriage is an intimate covenant relationship between a man and a woman, which by its very nature is for the good of the couple and the generation and education of children.  The action taken by Multnomah County is a serious affront to the well being of marriage in our society.  Catholics support the respect for all persons, and protection of the institution of marriage.”

        The United States Bishops’ statement Between Man and Woman stated, “Across times, cultures and very different religious beliefs, marriage is the foundation of the family.  The family, in turn is the basic unit of society.”  They continued, “Marriage is the fundamental pattern of male-female relationships.  It contributes to society because it models the way in which women and men live interdependently and commit, for the whole of life, to seek the good of each other.”

        We urge Multnomah County Commissioners to reconsider this decision.
