Peter’s Pence Collection to be taken on June 27

The annual Peter’s Pence collection will be taken in the parishes of the Archdiocese of Portland the weekend of June 26 – 27. The theme for this year’s collection is “Speak the truth in love, live the truth in deeds.” Peter’s Pence collection helps the Holy Father provide immediate assistance in emergencies to the most disadvantaged throughout the world. The Holy Father provides assistance to those who suffer war, oppression and natural disasters.

Archbishop John G. Vlazny is the Chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Ad Hoc Committee on the Economic Concerns of the Holy See. In a letter to the Bishops of the United States Archbishop Vlazny wrote, “Through our works of charity, Catholics provide a witness of love and deeds throughout the world.” He asked Bishops to promote the collection as “an opportunity to put our faith into action.”

More than 98 cents of each dollar contributed goes to the spiritual and charitable works of the Holy Father. Peter’s Pence collection is supported by more than 1 billion Catholics worldwide. Last year Catholics in the Archdiocese of Portland contributed $104,793 to support the works of the Holy Father.

The Peter’s Pence collection traces it roots to the mid-ninth century England. King Alfred the Great collected a “pence” from English landowners as financial support for the Pope. Pope Pius IX formally instituted the modern Peter’s Pence collection in the 1860’s. The collection is traditionally held on the Sunday closest to the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, which is June 29.
Catholics in Western Oregon are asked to be generous with their contribution to Peter’s Pence in their support for the works of the Holy Father.
