Archbishop to ordain two men as transitional deacons
Archbishop John G. Vlazny will ordain two men as transitional deacons on Saturday, December 15, at St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. The Mass of Ordination will begin at 11:00 a.m. Those being ordained are Thomas M. Layton and Fred J. Anthony. A man ordained as transitional deacon will continue his studies and preparation towards being ordained a priest.
Thomas M. Layton was born in 1944 in Lawrenceville, IL to William F. and Lois C. Layton, both deceased. Thomas attended St. Monica and Coos Catholic School in Coos Bay, OR, and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1962. He attended Prince George’s Community College in Largo, MD, earning an Associate of Arts degree in computer science in 1971, and later worked for the Federal Aviation Administration. He entered Sacred Heart Seminary in Hales Corners, WI in January 2004. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies degree in 2006.
Mr. Layton’s ministry training has included assignments at St. Cecilia Parish in Beaverton, and at St. James Parish in McMinnville.
Fred J. Anthony was born in 1953 in Coos Bay, OR. He is the son of Fred S. Anthony (deceased) and Kathryn F. Anthony. Fred attended elementary school at Coos Catholic School in Coos Bay, and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1972. He then served in the United States Air Force for twenty years. Mr. Anthony graduated from Cardinal Stritch University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies. He entered Sacred Heart Seminary in Hales Corners, WI in the fall of 2003.
Mr. Anthony’s ministry training has included assignments at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Portland, St. Mary Parish in Corvallis, field placement at Repairers of the Breach, a homeless shelter, and Clinical Pastoral Experience at the University of Colorado Hospital.
Both Mr. Layton and Mr. Anthony will continue with their studies and preparations at Sacred Heart Seminary as they work toward ordination as priests.
