Faith Communities

UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND REX COMMUNITY each month gathers adults with developmental disabilities and students from the University to form community that shares friendship, faith, and celebrates life through music, art, prayer, dance, meals, service.  Committed student volunteers arrive early to help set up, greet friends as they arrive on the LIFT buses, share one on one time visiting with REX members, and prayer and celebrations, and stay late to be sure everyone has their ride home, and help clean up.  Inspiring too, are the number of UP alumni who continue to come to share in community.  It is an afternoon once a month that is so looked forward to and enjoyed by all who attend.   For more information, call OPD at 503-233-8319.

SHAMROCK REX COMMUNITY celebrates the third Sunday of each month from 2:00 - 4:00 at Queen of Peace parish in Salem.  This community gathers adults with developmental disabilities from the Salem area and neighboring cities with parishioners of Queen of Peace and family members.  Recently, the core planning team of Shamrock met to explore ways to meet the growing numbers of people attending and ways to support the needs of community members with more severe disabilities.  All are looking forward to the March celebration which will be a St. Patrick’s theme complete with faithful Shamrock member, Don McIsaac playing bagpipes.  For more information, call Don McIsaac at 503-581-4596.

ADAPTED LITURGY makes it possible for families and family members with more severe disabilities or difficult behavior needs to celebrate the Eucharist with a faith community that is welcoming and accommodating of all special needs.  Elements of the liturgy are designed to encourage participation of all present.  Last month, members of the Special Needs committee of St. Pius X parish attended to learn about adapted liturgies with the hope of beginning an Adapted Liturgy for their area.
