The Archdiocese of Portland, established in 1846, exists to witness the Good News of Jesus Christ by exercising His mission to teach, sanctify, and shepherd His people. From the Pacific coast to the Cascades, our local church is blessed with a rich and diverse cultural heritage.
As a unified body of Christ, our parishes infuse the Catholic faithful with a keen sense of faith, hope, and purpose – all of which we believe can be truly found in a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ, who offers a love that transforms and unites.
Archbishop Sample was recently asked, "Why do we exist?" His answer was simple yet profound: "We exist to witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ!"
When asked, "What do we do?" he responded: "We minister the salvation of Jesus Christ by carrying out His mission to teach, sanctify, and shepherd His people."
From Astoria to Brookings, parishes fulfill this mission by "focusing on the people we have." From Ashland to Gresham, clergy and laity are called to "bring people to a living and transformational encounter with Jesus Christ." From Shady Cove to Portland, the Archdiocese will thrive by "educating people to embrace the true teachings of the Catholic Church."
